Loading kills me in cs (but not dod/tfc/hl)

OK ive got steam working fully- but my comp always crashes (i.e. no response to anything) when it gets up to Precaching Resources in loading a counter strike game. The strange thing is this doesn't happen in Team Fortress Classic, Day of Defeat or Half Life itself and they all load games fine!

Any ideas?

i think this is a steam porblem so i will delete my cs steamapps directory and let steam rebuild it- if this fails i will delete the gcf and let steam redownload it
