Issues running Wolf: ET

Hey guys!

I downloaded Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory and installed it fine. When I go to run it, the game runs absolutely great, except that it is stuck in 800x600 resolution and docked in the lower left corner (not ideal for gaming ) So I tried running in window mode and it fails to load. I wouldn't mind just running in fullscreen if i could center it, but ideally I would like to run it windowed.

Everything in console goes fine until...

Code:
Started tty console (use +set ttycon 0 to disable)
^5PunkBuster Client: PunkBuster Client (v1.152 | A0) Enabled
^5PunkBuster Client: Game Version [ET 2.60 linux-i386 Mar 10 2005]
^5PunkBuster Client: Not Connected to a Server
Resolving etmaster.idsoftware.com
etmaster.idsoftware.com resolved to 192.246.40.60:27951
A black window opens up as if the game is about to load but it stalls and it just says that in the console. I appreciate any response!

Hi,

i got the same prob on my system.
I am running Ubuntu-Dapper. Besides i have installed all 3-D accelleration Components for my NVidia card.

What are your system specs?
Have also run the 2.60 update?

I don't think I tried using the update. I remember someone on the Ubuntu forums or somewhere saying that the lower docking can be fixed through editing xorg.conf, but I'm not sure. I'm trying to run ET on an Acer Aspire 1640 with a Pentium M 1.73. 1024GBs of RAM and 128MB Video (The Intel i915GM) and I do have 3D accelleration working. I'm also using Ubuntu 5.10.

Hey,

thanks for your reply! I just met some kind Ubunt-User guys in Munich yesterday. We had an Ubuntu-User Meeting. Probably they know about the issue. I will keep you posted.

The updates name is:
et-linux-2.60-update.x86.run
by the way

Just google for:" index of et-linux-2.60-update.x86.run" and you will find it.
Did you also installed it as root or as usual user?

hey i had the same problem with my enbemy territory but after looking for help in #linux-gamers.net they came up with the solution =)
well after ive installed my nvidia drivers the last version 8756 i think they it asked me if i wanted them to automaticaly update my xorg.conf and i've said yes =) every thing going nicve except for ET wich has that left corner window problem
the problem is that your xorf.conf dont recognize other resolutions other 1024x768 (in my case) and the enemy territory cant override this so it shows the 640x480 window on the bottom of the 1024 screen the resolution its pretty easy u just have to pick ur xorg.conf and in the lines were u have: Modes 1024x768 u just write: Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480" and now u can play a nice game in a nice window =P GL and HF sc0t!

Hey sc0t, thanks for the input!

I added those resolutions to my xorg.conf but the result was unfavorable. With my laptop I have to use a program called 855resolution and adjust my resolution that way. I have the compatible resolutions designated within that program but it still docked in the lower left corner.

Thanks though!

I had the same problem and it was a little bit annoying. I even thought my TFT had misunderstand the input or something (sometimes happens) and I pushed the auto resize button with no success. Then I tried other thing and that one solved it, just using the same resolution you've got on your desktop. In my case:
Desktop - 1200*1024
Game - 1200*1024

Solved!

Another anoyance I've got with this game (If someone can help) is how to set sound. I can't hear a thing. If I run et from a terminal I obtain:

------- sound initialization -------
/dev/dsp: Input/output error
Could not mmap /dev/dsp

I'm using latest ALSA. Does it only support OSS?

Thanks in advance!

Hey seimour, thanks for the input!

Well on a laptop I don't have a resize button for my monitor (or at least I don't think I do) unfortunately. However, I believe I edited my ET file so that it would run at 1280x800 (the native resolution for my laptop) and it stilled reverted back to 800x600. But I reinstalled the game in a different location this time (before hand it was in my /home/ directory but now i installed it to /usr/local/games/enemy-territory). After I reinstalled it I can't seem to find the configuration files for it, and I'm afraid there aren't any. I have to set the configs every time I log in. I even checked /usr/local/bin and I haven't seen anytihng. Nothing in my home directory either.

But that's unrelated.

For the sound, I'm using Alsa and I seem to get sound fine. Be sure to play around with your settings. For some games, changing the audio device and stuff in Gnome affected my sound in the games. Good luck! Unfortunately I'm still a Linux newbie and I don't know much about the sound system to give worth while feedback. Good luck though!

Hi ABomb, I see this topic is still alive, that's good
When I installed ET I just let all the options by default. If you didn't enter the root password it'll will install it on your home dir, not for my case, but I do remember somewhere during the installation mentioned two folders (I didn't modify) one regarding where to install the game and another for what ever, don't remember though.

Regarding where ET stores your config, I think it's located under your home dir but it's hidden (remeber dirs. that start with a '.' aren't listed when you use ls, unless you indicate it), it's something like this:

/home/your-name-here/.etwolf/etmain

There is located the etconfig.cfg and other files.

In addition my xorg.conf file is like:
16bit: 800x600 600x480
24bit: 1200x1024
So the affirmation that if you've got only one resolution there you will obtain the small screen isn't true.

Hope it helps - Cheers!
