So I am a total linux newb. I am really eager to start using linux but it has been realllllllllly hard for me. I have ubuntu edgy. Can somone tell me how to install snes9x and all its prequisites. Don't expects to just know stuff either I need like a word by word guide. I'm really bad at this. But I finally managed to figure out how to change directories i the terminal

What was the name of the file you downloaded? I just downloaded snes9x-1.43-linux-x86.tar.gz and it seems that all that needs to be done is unpack that tar.gz file (these files are compressed archives of files, sort of like a ZIP file is).

Change directory to where the file is located, then do a "tar zxvf snes9x-1.43-linux-x86.tar.gz" (without quotes). This will create a snes9x-1.43 directory, which you can cd into. The executable is in that directory and it's called snes9x, so you can run it with "./snes9x" (also without quotes). There are some text files in there that you might like to read.

For info about the tar program, see the man page - run "man tar".

Open a terminal, and do

sudo apt-get install snes9express

I would recommend zsnes, though. It has a built-in GUI and is easier to use.
In that case:

sudo apt-get install zsnes

You will need the universe and multiverse repositories enabled.

Some things don't get added to the application menu. To start zsnes, press ALT + F2 and type zsnes in the box that comes up.
