how-to find fps?

PAa-LEAse point me towards info on how to check fps.

Mandrake 9.2, current game (does that matter?): ut2004demo
on board sis video and sound, I have no Idea what info is needed.

The only thing I've found so far is "stat fps" I entered it at command line (user and su) but it returned command not found.

Thanks,

Are you wanting it for ut2004 or just in general? If you type glxgears on the command line it will report the fps on that.

Both I suppose.
The glxgears worked in general.
To check fps of the game do I just run glxgears while the game is being played?

Extreme Thanks,

No that wouldn't be how you'd do it. I found this from another site through google
http://www.linuxgames.com/news/feedb...ction=flatview
Quote:
Here is how to do it,

ut2004demo/Benchmark/botmatch-rankin.sh
#!/bin/sh
../ut2004demo dm-rankin?spectatoronly=true?numbots=12?quickstart=true?attractcam=true -benchmark -seconds=77 -ini=default.ini -exec=..\Benchmark\Stuff\botmatchexec.txt $*

ut2004demo/Benchmark/Stuff/botmatchexec.txt
showhud
ship

-----------------
execute botmatch-rankin.sh
check ~/ut2004demo/Benchmark/benchmark.log

numbers are low, average, high fps.
I haven't tested it yet but I will sometime to see if that works.

Holy carp, thats probably a little too complicated for me yet.

Is there usually a loose correlation between fps in general and during a game?
Or does fps in the desktop mean ziltch when trying to see if I'd be ok for gaming?

In general when I ran glxgears it ran between 400 and 1000 fps.

Is there a fps when in the desktop that would cause you to say "your probably ok for gaming"

Thanks again,

When you are playing an intense game like unreal, halo, battleground 1942, etc, other things go into it. The amount of system memory and processor speed and video cardard performance are all very important in gaming. Basically if you play a game and it is very jumpy and sometimes a little offsync with the sound then the game is too much for your system. There are things you can do in the game to make it perform better. Reduce resolution, reduce detail. etc etc. I run glxgears and get about 1100. I have some trouble with some games. I have to lower the resolution, and all that. It sounds like your system is a little slow for some of the new games, but I can't say for sure. Just play the demos if you can and see how smooth it is.

I have dual 1 GHz processors, 384 MB of mem and a GeForce FX 5200 graphics card. Halo and UT2003 run good except when too much is going on. I have to lower the screen res to about 800x600.

Thank you very much benjithegreat98,
I guess I should go over to one of my friends house and see what a game on a good system system looks like. At this time I have nothing to compare with, other than tux racer this is the first graphically intense game I've seen.
Thanks again.

If you play a game and it is jerky, then you will know. If you ask me, if you want to get into gaming then get an xbox or ps2 or something. That way a game will work with no questions or without being slow.

Thanks,
True of course.
I started to actively persue getting advanced games to work in linux to help keep my daughters interest in linux. : )
She gets tired of frozen bubble and tux racer and starts booting into XP.
I am trying to ween my family (then the world) off of windows.
Only halfway joking of course. : )
She wants a Playstation but its going to have to wait a while. : (
Thanks again,

UT2004 should have the almost same commands and cvars as Quake III Arena does.

What you can do is go in a game, record a demo [bring down the console, type /autorecord] of yourself playing and then play the demo with timedemo set on

after you recorded the demo, go back to the main menu, bring down the console

type:

/timedemo 1

/demo demoname

it will start playing the demo very quickly, depending on how well your vid card performs

after the demo it will show you statistics on the console window what your average fps will be

hope this helps

In UT2004, you just type stat fps into console to get in game fps.

on a 9600xt and a 2000+ you should pull in about 60 fps a second at 1024
