Not necessarily, just configure X as you normally would. Make sure the driver name is correct in the XF86Config file when you are done.

By the way, I mentioned earlier that you can use "init 3" to stop X if it is starting automatically on boot. Typing "init 5" will bring X back up from that console session. These are "runlevels" and the default level is set by a line in /etc/inittab. You can change it there if you ever care to.

i know about runlevels. in Sax2, i looked at the driver and it said "R350NH (radeon)" under the ATI category. is this correct? i believe that the ATI drivers set it at that. i also see a driver for the radeon 9700 but not the 9800

Chances are you need to configure X via SaX2, then rerun the ATI driver installation in order to get the correct driver configured in the XF86Config file.

did that after i configired X with SaX2. a funny thing happened, today after no messing around, i played a game of Natural-Selection (a half life mod) via steam, and it appereared to run a bit smoother. still not smooth enough though.

At this point I'd sell the ATI and buy an NVIDIA. Oh wait, I already did that! The Ti4200 is still a contender and it's cheap.

Hello.
Did iget this roght, that i need 2.4.22 or later kernel in order to install these ATI driver and get 3D support?
I currently have: 2.4.21-166-athlon
I still tryed to install fglrx.
So here is the steps i made:
1) i downloaded latest drivers from ati.com
then i did rpm -Uhi --force <fglrx_package_name>
And output what i get is here: http://elu.dyn.ee/mohaa/lisa/fglrx
( module flgrx isn't loaded )
So i tryed this thing what instructions said ( ./make.sh & ./make_install.sh )
Output is here: http://elu.dyn.ee/mohaa/lisa/make_install
So im really stuck. If someone could help me i'd we grateful.
Some info about my PC that may be useful:
Linux: SuSE 9
Kernel: 2.4.21-166-athlon
XFree: 4.3
Motherboard: (EPOX EP8RDA+) NVIDIA 'NFORCE2' ultra 400 chipset.
Graphic: Radeon 9600 pro
I really want and need 3D support
Regards

i have almost the exact same setup as you.... exept be aware that NForce 2 motherboards require a little change in instructions. go here http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...hreadid=122514 and read the whole thread before installing anything or else you will just waste alot of time. hope this helps
