How do install games like ut2003?

i just started using SuSE linux 9.0 pro a few weeks ago. now that i have everything set up, i wanna play some games! i want to install ut2003. but i hear all this talk about multiple disks, i have it and i is only one disk, is there a special linux version that i have to buy or something?

zidane2010 01-22-2004 10:56 AM

OMG! lol i found the extrra disks.. now what? i think i start off with disk 3?

LavaDevil94 01-22-2004 11:46 AM

you start with disk 3, but do it like this:
mount /your/cdrom/mountpoint
sh /your/cdrom/mountpoint/linux_installer.sh
do NOT go to the cdrom directory and do it, otherwise the device wont be able to eject. if theres any troubles you run into, theyre probably in here:

its a REALLY big FAQ on linux gaming, so take your time looking around.

done! ummm... should i be getting 10 fps on my radeon 9800 pro?

LavaDevil94 01-22-2004 08:04 PM

yes, if youre using mesa3d and the dri drivers. install the ati drivers, then hit glxinfo in at the konsole and look for a line that says direct rendering: X, where X is Yes or No.

zidane2010 01-22-2004 08:14 PM

i do have the newest ati drivers installed. and what is mesa3D? (i am a noob)

54d1 01-23-2004 04:33 AM

If you have properly installed ati driver, then type fglrxinfo, you should get something like this (my output):

display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: RADEON 9600 XT x86/MMX/3DNow!/SSE
OpenGL version string: 1.3 (X4.3.0-3.7.0)

If you are getting output Mesa3d (or DRI) instead of ATI Technologies (or command don't run at all) that means you don't use ATI driver (or driver isn't correctly installed). If you are getting output similar to mine then your configuration appears to be fine.

yep... looks all good. so why is it doing this? i dont have AA on or anything. im running it at same detail level (and a slightly lower res) as windows and in windows i get like 90fps weird

zidane2010 01-23-2004 12:12 PM

and lava, it sais Yes beside direct rendering

Low FPS

If you open a terminal and type in "glxgears", you should see a window popup with a test prog of spinning gears. In the console window you will see some framerate test results posted every five seconds. Here I get over 4700 fps after the first five second interval (which was 4194 fps) with my GeForce Ti4200. You should be at least that high. Also, did you rerun SaX2 after you installed the ATI drivers to reconfigure X? If not, try that.

zidane2010 01-24-2004 04:13 PM

umm... funny, after installing the ATI drivers, SaX2 refuses to open.... no errors or anything, just doesnt open. is it possible that i did not install correctly? because in game like Enemy territory, i get a big fps rating.

XFree86 hosed?

Try making a backup of your /etc/X11/XF86Config file (in fact, there may be one there called "XF86Config.saxsave" created by SaX at some point), then deleting the original file (/etc/XF86Config). Rerun SaX2 and see if it opens this time.

zidane2010 01-24-2004 05:26 PM

ok, solved nothing. do i need to restart? or will the GUI not come up if i do that?

kc2kth 01-24-2004 06:24 PM

SaX

You need to be doing this from a console login (not with X running). If X is starting automatically when you boot, you can shut X down by opening a console window and typing "init 3". See if SaX starts when you try it from a console session.

zidane2010 01-24-2004 08:06 PM

Sax2 does come up, but everything is garbled then i have to restart. :(

yeah, i also got steam working today. and im getting a horrible frame rate of 20
