How do I launch Steam in a Window?

Hello all.

How can I launch the games that Steam executes in a window? I don't know what Steam is actually executing in order to tell WineX to put it in a window. At the moment it goes full screen, and I can't see anything.

in your wine config file add the following :

[AppDefaults\\hl.exe\\xldrv]
"Desktop" = "800x600"

it its quite possible that this line is already in there, but it may have a ; semicolon ;
in front of the line, and if it is already there with the semicolon, then remove the
semicolon for it can read that line ... oh, and change 800x600 to the desired resolution
obviously lower than what your present screen resolution is set at ...

Many thanks! I've got a window now -- woo-hoo!

But now I get an error when I try to start up a game.

Half-Life FileSystem_Steam Error
SteamStartup(0xf,0x406c2478) failed with error 108:
The local Steam Service is not running

Any ideas on how I can fix this?

EDIT:
I found the following FAQ about the error, but the only place Steam.dll exists is in my Valve/Steam directory.
