HLDS on old pentium 3
hi noob here - I want to put HLDS on a pentium 3 450mhz with 384 ram. I was advised to get an up-to-date linux distro that wil work with those specs. I tried Q4OS and antix linux but they wudnt install right. can anyone suggest what I might do from here?

In what way or with what issues did they not install right?
With a Pentium-3 you will most likely need a 32-bit distribution has all packages compiled to the i686 (or even i386) standard. You MIGHT get an old Debian image for that, but the only ones I know that really support it are anti-X and alpine. Even with those, make sure you get the image that supports old 32-bit. I do not know EVERYTHING, so there may be some others, but these days the pickings are slim. Many distributions have gone so far as to ONLY support X86_64 (and possibly ARM-64) and have dropped support for those older processors. For reference Quote:
If so, two things strike me: 1. You would need (I believe) STEAM, and I am not sure it will run on that device. 2. If it does, I would not expect to be happy with the performance. If someone has experience with this and I am totally off base, please correct me. |
hi wpeckham - yep its Half-life dedicated server I shud hav said that. thanx for your reply.
u dont need steam - my aim is just to hav it as a lan server for half life for like 8 players. here's some info on it https://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/HLDSUpdateTool https://developer.valvesoftware.com/...dicated_Server |
Antix would be my first choice and should work what did not work?

Moving the cursor brings my screen up when it blanks out. Those are terminal commands I gave you. The xset command gives out options on time before screen blanking. Code:
$ xset -q Code:
Screen Saver: Back when I 1st started learning this stuff. I LEARNED how to use midnight commander in cli boot up. Make a text file and save it. Edit text files and save them in cli boot. It was good thing to learn when I was in your situation. I AM ON MY MOTORCYCLE SHOP DESKTOP wifi COMPUTER presently. Caps lock turn on accidentally because that key sits right above shift key. Code:
$ inxi -G |
Once it boots can you open an alternate terminal? ALT-F3 for example should open TTY3in text/terminal mode and allow you to log in on that terminal to use command line commands for troubleshooting and investigation. ALT-F1 on my system would send you back to the GUI, but it may be ALT-F6 on yours. It ccan be different for different configurations used in different versions or distributions.

Just in case
https://www.slitaz.org/en/get/flavors.php Edit. unable to release cdrom means you run live off the cd without pulling out the disk. Like on Puppy which loads into ram stick. |
