HL2 source leaked!!!

This is probably the biggest reason to never use outlook.

lol!

I wonder if this is the REAL reason it caused the delay of the game?

I hope WineX will work with HL2. Or, better, if Valve made this game for linux!

teval 10-03-2003 04:45 PM

I've been working on the source of a while, and I got it to compile, albeit not working. Still doesn't find some modules, but that's all very fixable. Just need to dig and see where it's expecting to find them.
I wonder if valve would like patches sent?
Anyone think it's a bad idea if I email them asking :P
Would be interesting if they would make it GPL, while not allowing other games to spin off from that code. I'm sure people would contribute to it.

Micro420 10-03-2003 05:02 PM

GPL would be nice, but they are a private company that needs $$$$$!

Maybe people like you could use the source for some GPL games. Tux Racer in the style of HL2!

Maybe someone from ID, Doom 3, purposely did this to Valve to hurt their business. hehe

More likely to be either
a) a disgruntled employee
b) a misguided fool who thought he'd "help out" the Linux community by releasing it
c) a major internal balls up

nemat0de 10-04-2003 02:30 PM

I think it would be hilarious if a linux client showed up before the winblows version did. Suck on that Gabe:P

XavierP 10-04-2003 02:38 PM

It would make a pleasant change!

teval 10-04-2003 04:33 PM

Heh,
Not really.. Linux version isn't quite ready.
The code is littered with quite a bit of windows only code. It's also conflicting with new versions of glibc & gcc. The makefiles need some reworking, and ld has some problems with the module loading code. I'm working on fixing it all up, I'll even offer valve a patch if they want.. I don't mind.
I don't have much expirience with very modular programs in Linux, and still have to figure out why it won't load the .so files.

"Maybe someone from ID, Doom 3, purposely did this to Valve to hurt their business" - no they were asking for something like this ignoring the linux community the way they were. WE WANT CS ON LINUX!!

Well.. not any time soon.
The shader doesn't have OpenGL in it, or any reference to it. No bindings, just an empty folder. It only has various DX versions..
So.. it'll take a while before they make a Linux version.

mossy 10-04-2003 07:03 PM

hmm that's a shame eh.

Baldorg 10-04-2003 07:06 PM

1. They use windows XP
2. They use windows XP on machines used for developpement
3. They use outlook
4. Machines used for developpement are connected to the Internet, that has to be their biggest error.
5. Ever heard of firewalls?

This ALMOST looks made on purpose.

mossy 10-04-2003 07:09 PM

yeah pretty lame is'nt it heh heh heh.

but it is possible, right?

teval 10-04-2003 10:31 PM

Very,
Actually.. it's almost guaranteed to happen, since there is Linux support throughout the code. Except for the shader/material system.. which is critical.
But the entire code everywhere else seems to be geared twarods separating linux and windows. So.. yeah, they've put in a lot of effort for a Linux version.
