Half-Life 2 Mods on Debian...

Hi!!, I'm just a few steps on deciding if installing Debian on my Home pc or not...
A friend of mine, has HL2, and he has some several cool mods runing in the "Source" engine, but he is "blind" and has Windows XP, and my question is if these mods can run on wine?... I know that Steam is necessary to run these mods, and to run Steam I have to run Wine, but I don't know if I can install and run them on Wine (mods like "The Hidden", "Dystopia" and so...), if I can, how?

OH!!, and before I forget, I plan on getting the HL2 GOTY Edition (Game of The Year) and it has the full HL2 (obvious), the first HL in Source, HL2 Deathmatch and Counter-Strike Source... Is it going to be problems in installing runing all of them? if the answer is "oh hell yes" then PLZ teach me why...

The answer is "oh hell yes". Linux is not Windows. Do not pass Go and do not collect $200.

If you want to run Windows software effectively you need to use Windows, you can dual-boot between Windows and linux easily and it would be far easier for a newbie than making Steam and HL2 run in linux. That said, I've found HL2 runs pretty well in linux using Cedega but you need to pay for that, it's not free. Cedega isn't too difficult to use so you could try that, once you have HL2 running then any mods will work as it's the same game, just different graphic content.

Hi!

I had no problems running Half-Life 1 and 2 and some other games that use Source engine in Linux using Wine (actually Portal 2 performed better in Wine than in Windows, which is why I preferred to play it with Wine). I mostly played solo, but tried also some multiplayer sessions over LAN and had no issues.

I recommend using PlayOnLinux (packaged in many mainstream distributions). It allows you to change Wine version and configuration for each application individually, so that you do not need to change configuration every time you switch between different apps. Also it provides nice user interface. If you plan to play more on Linux then I recommend installing both the Linux Steam client as well as Windows steam client (with PlayOnLinux).

Note that many vanilla games from Valve have been ported to Linux, but in order play third party mods you still need the Windows versions of these games (like HL 1 and 2).

(I know this thread is 6 months old, but maybe it will help someone)

Cheers
