i have got gta vice city working as in www.frankscorner.org , but i keep getting this error message:
Unhandled exception: c0000005
At address: 00652aa0
this appears in a message box.
i can start gta, go the the play menu, but after i choose new game or open an old game, it shows the message box. heres the winedbg stuff:
0x00652aa0 (gta-vc.exe..text+0x251aa0 in gta-vc.exe): cmpb $0x0,0xc(%ebx)
Wine-dbg>bt
Backtrace:
=>0 0x00652aa0 (gta-vc.exe..text+0x251aa0 in gta-vc.exe) (ebp=000000ff)
Wine-dbg>quit
WineDbg terminated on pid 8
i really wanna play this game, and i dont want it to be a matter of booting into windows each time.

Hmm... Are you using the version of Wine the howto was used with? If youre not, try that version. If it still doesnt work, you could try WineX: http://transgaming.com
Or, if you dont want to pay (CVS version): http://transgaming.org
The catch is the free wineX is usually unstable and unsupported. I also believe it's not as convenient to install either, depending from where you got it. An unofficial repackaged [from source] free version of wineX is available here : http://www003.portalis.it/115/winexx.html
in answer to your questions:
p4 3.2ghz
1gb ram
256mb nvidia geforce fx5600
which is probably why it runs nicely
i think i could have installed it, but since id already copied from the windows install for when i tried it with wine, i couldnt be bothered to install again (installs take ages in winex) so i just copied it from my wine folder to my winex folder. however, i started the install before i changed my mind, and it got past the problem it has in wine (it didnt show the "complete previous install" messsage or whatever).
yeh i think it might be my problem that i was using wnie 20040505 - i figured "why would a new version have less support? that would just be stupid". ive found a lot of stuff that only works on 20031212 (ok 2 things, but still)
i still think wine is amazing - running internet explorer was what converted me - not because its so useful, its just funny that you can run ms programs.
i tried running the winxp install but it said i had to be administrator
ok so when i said perfectly, that wasnt the best choice of words. since then, ive found some problems:
when you quit, the screen is all ****ed, but its fine if you ctrl alt f6 then ctrl alt f7 and wait a bit
also you cant overwrite savegames, but i think ive worked around this by making a script which backups you saves, so you can just fill up all 8, then run the script, then continue.
also the startup movie the rockstar and then the stuff after that is really bad, but if u just click a lot it gets past it and it works.
edit: you can save fine, it was just cos my file were copied from ntfs, they were readonly. i changed that and now that problem is fixed.
This post may or may not help I just felt like tossing in my comments.
I haven't tried getting gta:vc working in wine but I got it working in winex cvs and it worked great for awhile with the radio stations playing without skips, video and everything looked great and the only 2 problems I experienced initially were the voices from the people walking the street sounding rather tincan-ish if you know what I mean, and a little lag when I'd move the mouse around too look while running or while turning fast in car at high speed.. otherwise everything was working great..... until the "hmmm.. nice bike" part where he sees the guy park the motorcycle... I moved him over to jump on the bike and as soon as I did a box popped up which obviously was not part of the game, and the game froze. That pissed me off so I just removed the game from my drive and decided to not play it again on my Linux box.
I beat gta:vc on a Windows box several months previous to this but I wanted to see how it would work with wine/winex cvs. Honestly I don't know why I loaded the game up again to begin with.. Once I beat it I find it boring to play again. I guess I'm just more of a fan of multiplayer games.

I have
Athlon 2800XP
512 Mb Ram
ATI Radeon 9700 Pro
SUSE 9.1 WineX 3
I have installed the Game under Win2kSP4 and copied it into my Linux Gamefolder, the Game is patched and cracked allready...
Oh...ATI 3D-Support is enabled...Last Time i often play RTCW and SOF2, and i know that these Games are Real openGL Games...
I read this:
wine ( or winexX ) gta-vc.exe -- -opengl
but when i start the Game it gets into a black screen and freeze...Nothing helps.Ive tried it really often...with Mouseclicks, pressing Escape, and all the other things you can do to kill Startmovies in Games, it WON´T WORK..but theres no Error message...
All i can do is press Ctrl + Alt + Backspace, and restart X
Please help me...its my favorite Game...All i wanna do is ridin the PCJ on LINUX
try a) renaming the files in the movies folder and pressing enter until it shows the rockstar north screen
b) using winex (or cedega now) and not using opengl - thats the whole point of winex (the directx implementation)
