gnubg-0.14.3 backgammon-- no make file?

I'm trying to install this backgammon game, and i get past the ./configure step, and when i try and "make" i get this error message:
make: *** No targets specified and no makefile found. Stop.

when i "ls" there is no make file, not even hidden. There is however makefile.am and makefile.in...

i dont know what to do.
any suggestions?

Im on Hardy heron 8.04
