Games work in Debian, but not Ubuntu
 

I finally stopped being lazy and got WINE up and running under debian. The first game i tested was I wanna be the guy and it runs pretty much the same as under windows, even down to the bugs the game has. Now i am of course very happy my games work under Debian, but i can't figure out why they do not work under Ubuntu. I am using the same games in both, so that rules out hardware. I have all the Xorg packages too so i really am at a loss. Even games installed under Ubuntu's package manager crash. Basically when i try to start a game in Ubuntu it starts up for like a second or split second, then the screen gets super zoomed, then goes to black for a second, then returns to my login screen. I do not have this problem under Debian or Arch, so i am very confused as to what is happening. Given that the games under Ubuntu's package manager aren't working that rules out WINE as the problem. And given they work fine under Debian that rules out hardware. Any ideas? Would really like to fix this problem.

maybe a graphics driver issue?

i've thought of that a bit, but two problems make me wonder if that is really the answer: Why does it work under debian with no extra driver installations? and the other one is why is the only game that DOES work a bomberman clone. If it was just Ultima or something that didn't work drivers would seem viable. But the bomberman clone has decent graphics and IWBTG is an 8bit game. so that and the fact that debian worked right off the disk makes me think its not the drivers. But at this point it can't hurt to check, so how can i check what graphics driver i have installed in ubuntu?

Not sure, been a few years since I used ubuntu, but I think it was called restricted drivers or something like that. It could also be the version of WINE installed in ubuntu that could be an issue. I usually use playonlinux as a front end for WINE, and it lets you configure each application independently and choose which version of WINE that app uses. Maybe try that and match that to the version of WINE you used in Debian.

its the same version. i had to get the .deb file for both my distros. cant remember how i got it on arch...been a long time since i got to play with arch. Anyway WINE run games not running is only half the problem. there is like 3 games i got from the Ubuntu Software Centre that refuse to run also.

Well ... out of ideas. Things like this is why I left ubuntu for Debian
