Games on Linux?

Well for a long time now I've wanted to switch over to linux, and now I pretty much have the chance, but I have a few drawbacks..

Are windows games playable on Linux?I would probably be using ubuntu, and am a pretty big gamer..for instance I play WoW from time to time, some steam games, and other rpg and fps games, and just need to know if they are all still playable if I do switch over.

Any help/info on the subject would be appreciated,or if there's a post about this already send me to it

Add Crossover Games to the ways to run Windows games on Linux.

Compatibility lists:

Wine (Free) - http://appdb.winehq.org/
Crossover Games (commercial, partly open-source)- http://www.codeweavers.com/compatibi...pp_parent=4100
Cedega (commercial, proprietary code) - http://www.cedega.com/gamesdb/

Crossover follows the Wine codebase, but works to avoid 'regression' - when a new Wine release breaks what previously worked - and adds other features. Cedega forked from Wine years ago, and their code has diverged since. Thus, you may find games that run under Cedega but not Wine, but equally, you may find games that run under Wine and/or Crossover but not Cedega.

Performance varies - sometimes games actually run better under Linux, while other times they run similarly well or worse.

If most of the games you want to play will run fine on Linux, then it's obviously viable as your primary OS. If, OTOH, most of what you play won't work well on Linux, then Linux is probably not suited to being your primary OS.

If you want to use crossovergames you need to buy it for full version. So don't go for that.

I prefer you - Use Play on linux. It is based on wine. But easy to use. Because it scripted in such a way that it will automatically finds dependencies for the particular game/application. GUI based installation.

I **think** he means: Don't try to use Linux as your primary OS if most of what you need to do does not work on Linux.

I would at least TRY CrossOver.

You might be a candidate for using a virtual machine to run Windows inside Linux (or vice-versa)

My primary WoW machine is an Ubuntu 8.04 desktop. There is an interesting glitch with the latest WoW update, where the WoW folder keeps getting it's properties reset to r........., so I have to chmod it back again between the startup screen and the login screen. Other than that, it works very very well.

PlayOnLinux is definitely the best option I've seen without having to pay. I'm not a big gamer so it is what I use.

World of Warcraft, given its popularity, is one of the best-working programs on WINE. The Steam delivery client works well, but the compatibility of its individual games with WINE varies. For further reference be sure to check out the official WINE AppDB here, where you can search for information on running individual games and programs with WINE.
