Games fail to load (window creation failure)

I keep getting errors when I try to run 3D games such as America's Army and Second Life along the lines of:
Couldn't find matching GLX visual

My GFX card is running the latest nvidia drivers and OpenGL is enabled.
glxgears runs fine, with a framerate of <>700 at the default window size.
What am I overlooking?

Checking the error log, the game is complaining that the colour depth is not set to 32 bit. When I change the default colour depth in xorg.conf I get an error starting X saying 32-bit colour is not supported by the nVidia driver.

So how on earth does anyone run this thing?

GL has stopped working now, without me changing anything
GLxgears fails to create a GL context
