Falcon's Eye / Nethack not starting

I've just installed Falcon's Eye / Nethack and when I start it as su it works fine but when I start is as a user it flashes a screen and then nothing. I chowned the entire nethack directory, but still no dice.

I did have to install the SDL libraries v. 2 before installing Falcon's Eye / Nethack. Am I missing a permission there?
