Its seems that gta3 works under wine ...
http://appdb.winehq.org/appview.php?appId=936

Maybe the solution is patching the game as said in the desciption section

eh thanks but...
when I start the patch after 2 steps it asks me what folder my GTA III is in.
So I give it the folder and click next.
Then it says:

Error: gta3.exe is wrong version

after that it shuts down

Please help me

hmmm .... Are you applying the patch to the "original" gta3.exe, the one you get when you cleanly install the game ??

Some patches need to be applyed in sequence that is you have to patch it to version 1.3 to 1.0 you have first to go through all the previous patches ...

This is not very common in games but it could be that problem ... Check out the readme that comes with the patch and see if that is the case ...

Good Luck!

I know your trying GTA 3...but heres something may help even though its for Vice City. Franks Corner doesn't have GTA 3 on the list, but Vice City is....maybe this would help. If all else fails use Cedega for your games.

A lot of games work perfectly fine on Cedega... no point in waiting around on Linux to play your Windows games...its not going to happen.

Cedega is fine in my opinion.. I don't have a problem with any of my games. If you wait 2 years for Cedega to develop more the games your playing then still won't work.... so your always going to lose. Hate to say it, but if your not willing to give it a go for your games you might as well put a Windows install back on your system.

Oh no anything but putting the windows back on.
I might as well think about it a little longer...
