DOSBox Troubles

I am trying to play doom 2 through dosbox on suse 9.1. I have installed DOSBox and it is running. When I go to play the game, it is extremly slow. Unplayable. I have read that hitting ctrl+F12 is supposed to make the processor overclock, but nothing seems to happen when I do this. Ctrl+F8 is supposed to make the program skid frames, however I cannot get this function to work either.

Does anybody know how to solve this problem?

It's not a problem, DosBOX is really slow, especially for 3D games as Doom, Duke Nuken 3D and Alone in the Dark... for example. Try running something older as Prince of Persia and see if that is actually faster.

If it's not, then maybe it's either your graphics driver or your PC is not up for the challenge. I remember trying to play Rebel Assault 2 in a 2GHZ P4 and it was also unplayable...

Still, if it's only Doom that you are willing to play, there's a native port of Doom for Linux that I believe you can download from idsoftware homepage. Or better yet, you can run Doom with an enhanced engine with OpenGL support with Doom Legacy or jDoom and I bet you will get better results than with dosbox.

Regards!

Doom and Doom2 will be better if you use Doom Legacy or JDoom. DOSBox emulates hadware up to a 386/33, the minimum for Doom. You can sueeze it up to 486 by playing with the CPU cycle and frameskip numbers. I played Tyrian 2000 with 486 quality settings using cpu cycles=7500 nd frameskip=2, but there were still some levels with graphic effects that really slowed it down.
