Doom3

I am very exited about the Linux binaries that are to be released for Doom3 as Im sure alot of you are. My question is by that time I will be running my new Athlon64 box w/Debian. Considering that the pre-compiled binaries wont be compiled for Athlon64 I was curious as to whether at that point I am going to have to compile seperate 32 bit Kernel to run the game? If not will Debian just automatically run Doom3 in 32-bit mode? I just want to make sure that everything is ready to go when I buy the game and get the binaries so I dont have any unexpected failures.

You shouldn't as long as you have a Nvidia card. With the 64 OS, Nvidia has FINALLY added support for 32bit OpenGL in 64bit mode. In other words no, you will not need a 32bit kernel. However, you will need to install the 32bit /emul libs. I use Gentoo so it's actually a joke to do but i don't know about Debian. I play a lot of 32bit games in my 64bit OS. They all work fine with a minimal performance hit.

Nice, so does Unreal Tournament. And I'm about to try UT2K4 and NFS Underground. See how well they go.

yeah I need to get a copy of UT 2k4... I miss playing those games.... I played the heck out of the original UT, and I WILL have DOOM3 ... This makes my transition into linux much better seeing the only two games I really wanna play (unreal games and ID games) on linux..... God bless it ONly thing that would make my life better is a better 3D Chess game, Jose is cool but kinda buggy in 3D mode, and God aful slow (its written in java tho so what is expected?)

I really decided in honor of DOOM3 I am going to get a new GFX card... since I have a GeForce 440 MX .... hah.

The Rest of the system is nice tho, 512 MB of Ram, Athlon mobile barton clocked at 2.4 Ghz (effectively a 3600 + if one existed heh), 160 GB 8MB cache WD drive at 7200 rpm,

I just need to figure out which Gfx card is gonna offer the best Bnag for the Buck in an upgrade.... Right now I am looking at a refurbished 9800 pro w/ 128 MB of ram for 161.00 shipped. I am fine with refurbished stuff since it has a 30 day warentee... it just means you have to STRESS THE crap out of it for 30 days untill to check from problems heh.....and if it glitvches... Send her back heh

Besides a radeon 9800 pro anyone else got a suggestion as to a GFX card to get?

Ya, i just bought the MSI FX5900XT 128meg. I used to have a FX5200 and got around 2500-3000 fps in glxgears. Now, with the new card, i get 7000!! To me, this is/was a huge difference. My point, is that a 5700 cost 230 CDN dollars and the 5900XT was 267 CDN dollars. Obviously the difference in speed is huge so i went with the 5900. It really has a lot of bang for the buck.

The GeForce FX 5700 Ultra is sweet, I played Far Cry with all Medium detail and Tri-filtering under Cedega with that card, and it ran outdoor areas at around 40 FPS.

PS: Phorem, what resolution are you getting with that 5900? I'm running at 1600x1200 at 32-bit color, and I get around 4000 FPS...

I am running X at 1600x1200 and 32bit colour. I use that setting for both 32bit and 64bit Gentoo. The 64bit drivers are obviously faster in glxgears because i get that little extra from the cpu and native 64bit - i think. Here is some output...

bash-2.05b$ glxgears
28720 frames in 5.0 seconds = 5744.000 FPS
32408 frames in 5.0 seconds = 6481.600 FPS
32404 frames in 5.0 seconds = 6480.800 FPS
32352 frames in 5.0 seconds = 6470.400 FPS
32403 frames in 5.0 seconds = 6480.600 FPS
32409 frames in 5.0 seconds = 6481.800 FPS
32401 frames in 5.0 seconds = 6480.200 FPS

A little slower now...don't know why. But compared to my FX5200, it's day and night. Lava, i was looking for a 5700Ultra but couldn't find one. So i got the 5900XT. Lov'n IT!!

Also, UT2004 was set at 1024x768 32bit colour (with some goodies) and i got "maybe" 20-30 fps with the 5200. Now with the exact same settings i get 80-120 fps with the 5900XT. Man just Lov'n it. Good buy i think.

I wouldn't recommend ati cards at all at the moment. The linux drivers are crap. I'm doing ok on the old 3.2.5 drivers with my 9600XT, but compared to nvidia's linux support, ATI are a joke.

If you get a GeForce 5900XT, you can overclock it to a 5900 Ultra using NVClock, but be careful, it can fry your hardware:

Lava, the link doesn't work....

Should be http://www.linuxhardware.org/nvclock/ :-)

I tried that a couple days ago, but kept getting seg faults in 32bit. Nvclock doesn't seem to work in 64 at all (for now anyway) too. I don't think i want to push it yet......just got the card on Friday and i don't want to kill it this early in the game. What are the specs for the 5900 Ultra. Right now, i'm running it at 425/800. I think that's stock. Oh well, good enough for me :-)

Hehe, I don't know much about it, but I know that it's bitstream pipeline is twice as big as my card (yours is 256-bits, mine is 128). Sorry about that link, I'm not used to putting in that www anymore... I envy that machine of yours .
