Doom 3: Using native installer and can't locate saved game files or config files

Maybe this is because it's a native installer, I'm not sure, but I don't see the saved game files or the config files.
I myself like to copy them on a CD and in case I ever reinstall the system, I can easily copy them back in the folder (once the game is installed) and be all set.

I'm sorry if I'm a pest, asking a load of questions.

Oh, the info, lol, almost forgot:

This is Doom 3, using a native installer which does not seem to be connected with cedega/wine.

All your local configs and saves are located in

/home/you/.doom3

And you are quite right the installer is 100% native....no wine at all.

whats are the files named though? It's been a while, but I think I remember it being in "main" or "base", and having doom.cnf or something like that, and seeing "saved' and/or "autosave". but I don't see it. I'm not fimilar with native installers, and what file it may be under.

Not sure, I just tar the whole folder and back it up that way.
As a plus, it then keeps the duct-tape mod where it belongs.

But, I am pretty sure though that "/home/you/.doom3/base/DoomConfig.cfg" is the configuration file.
No clue on the saved games though.

This is what I have:

Doom3/

Changes (plain text document)
doom3 (shell script)
doom3-dedicated (shell script)
doom3.xpm (X Pixmap Image)
doomded.x86 (executable File)
doom.x86 (executable file)
libgcc_s.so.1 (Shared library)
libstdc++.so.5 (shared library)
License.txt (Plain text document)
openurl.sh (shell script)
readme (Plain text document)
readme.ID (readme document)
uninstall (shell script)
version.info (plain text document)

Doom3/base/

game01.pk4 through game03.pk4
pak001 through pak007.pk4

That's all. I did have doom 3 under windows, and had the saved files, etc, but I bet the native installer installed this differently.

Not 100% sure about Doom 3 but since Quake 4 is based off the Doom 3 engine I'm willing to bet it would apply. The Quake 4 README says that while the game is cross-platform, savegames are not. Windows saves won't work in linux if copied and vice-versa.

JBailey742 08-11-2006 10:42 PM

it makes sense that you cant cross windows with linux or visa versa. I think anyway. At least in this case.

So I'm S.O.L., or just copy everything? (These DVD-R discs may come in handy)

Does Doom3 run as smoothly as on Windows then?

WhiskeyTangoFoxtrot 08-14-2006 11:07 AM

in my experience, Doom3 and Quake4 run beter on Linux than on Windows XP. the savegames are kinda cross-platform, i used the savegames from D3 from windows and the game starts at the begining of that level and not the point where i saved the game.
also, the doom3 savegames like all ID soft engines are located in the Base* directory ( both in the installation dir and in linux in the $home/.doom3/base dir )

JBailey742 08-14-2006 01:46 PM

then it must be the gampak files. I did have this for windows, and I knew where it was, but the files are done differently on linux.

WhiskeyTangoFoxtrot 08-14-2006 06:04 PM

no mate, the pak files store nothing but data ( sounds, maps, textures, movies, etc etc ) the saved games are never stored in the pak files. look the system is almost the same for windows and linux, its the same engine afterall, just compiled using different libraries. on my comp i recall seeing the savegames folder in both teh hidden folder in $Home and in the place where i installed the game, will check up to see which is the windows version and which is the linux version. either way you will be able to use both with just the problem that you start from the begining of the level where you save the game.

JBailey742 08-14-2006 06:09 PM

ah, in the /home/jeremy/.doom3 folder. I kept looking in /home/jeremy/doom3/ folder. there's a difference I see. and now I finally see the files I can save. I tried /home/jeremy/doom3 while viewing hidden files, but not in /home/jeremy.

thanks a trillion.
