Doom 3 on openSUSE


Hello,

I am a Linux beginner and I have made a Doom 3 installation on

HP620 notebook, openSUSE 12.3 x86_64, KDE 4.10.5 "release 1"

When I try to launch the game either from the menu or as command (either as root or user) - the screen resolution is changed, some messages are quickly displayed, the game seems to start ... but the system logs out.

Thank you for any help

How did you install doom on OpenSUSE ?

are you trying to do this on a laptop/notebook with a Intel "3d chip" ( i965)

and not a FULL Nvidia or ATI card

wine uses OpenGL 2.2+ to emulate the Microsoft Direct X code

so you have to have full 3d card


install Windows 7 and play the direct X game on windows7 as it was intended to be ran on .

For Doom3 in Linux, I recommend dhewm3, which uses SDL.

Dunno if it will work with i965.

I have Windows XP 32-bit with Doom 3 on the same laptop and it had no problem. Maybe I have should install 32-bit openSUSE instead of 64-bit, the laptop has only 2GB RAM and no hardware virtualization

Doom 3 BFG Edition HD Textures from here h__p://linuxtor.org/viewtopic.php?t=31
Works perfectly and no dancing with a tambourine. Played on Linux Mint 17.1 cinnamon
In the description of the game said:
This distribution includes high resolution textures. Loaded levels for a bit longer but it's bearable. The build is disabled FFMPEG and SDL 1.2. Was going on openSUSE 13.1 x64. Serviceability checked on ROSA Desktop x64.

Since the thread was bumped and I still haven't played DOOM 3:

What are the currently recommended source ports for playing DOOM 3 with? I assume RDOOM3-BFG for the BFG edition and DHEWM3 for the regular edition?

And John VV, I assume you've realized your mistake after a year and two months, but DOOM 3 is not only not a DirectX game, it was actually released by its developers as a native Linux game. That is not to say that it can't be improved with one of the source ports that have come out since then.
