Counterstrike question

Is there actually a CS port for Linux, or do I have to install the windoze version and run it under wine?

Mega Man X 10-02-2003 12:04 PM

Hi fernandoo!!!

Nope, there's no port for Linux of CS and if you would ask me, I don't think it will ever be. It took already too long for the buggiest game ever made (Half-Life) to be ported to Linux. Sooner or later, when they release a port Half-Life Counter-Strike engine will be too old and boring (it started to be already since the infinity cheats made for it and graphics are not nice anymore).
In fact, you won't be able to play CS on Linux for the moment. Thanks to the brilliantly of Valve and CS Team, the only way to update Valve games is through a program called Steam, still not supported by WineX team. The game was working perfectly till last month, when CS 1.6 patch came out. One more reason because I don't like Half-Life or CS is because of the lack of respect from Valve and Counter-Strike team in 1-not making a Linux port 2-not fixing the numerous bugs the HL-Single Player has as getting stucked at walls, elevators or lost of sound, releasing patches with "fix" mplayer only(and by the way, huge patches) 3-for keep pushing Linux and Linux user to run Linux as a server only. Give a chance Unreal Tournament with Tactical Ops or even Quake 3 with Urban Terror. You can make both games run natively on Linux without a problem and they are great underrated modifications... Boycott Valve for a while ;) It's also time for us to support a Linux games... Neverwinter Nights, Unreal T2003, Quake3, Return to the Castle Wolfestein and many other that runs natively :)

mossy 10-02-2003 01:42 PM

YEAH Megaman X could not have said it more.
There is no excuse for them to port a linux version in the HL2 series as they'll have to redo CS2 anyway. No excuse if they don't.
Im using UT2003 and Quake3 natively and they run lovely.
Im going to install Urban Terror mod for Quake3 soon and i'll stick to that for my LAN parties until CS snaps out of it.

hey Megaman -

Linux-gamers.net has a howto on Steam/cs1.6 - haven't tried it myself...

Emulated: How to install Steam and Counter-Strike 1.6

Mega Man X 10-03-2003 03:50 AM

Hi Genesee!!!

Thanks a lot for the link matey :). I've bookmarked it and I will give it a try later. It's necessary to install IE6 to run Steam and I bet that won't be easy, but I will surely learn a lot doing so :)

Cheers

Slebine 10-04-2003 11:12 AM

Here's (yet) another petition site for Valve to release HL 2 natively for linux. (Ignore it if you've already signed it.)
http://cgi.riblet.plus.com/index.php

Back to playing NWN for a bit :D

mossy 10-04-2003 12:18 PM

wow that's a very good informative site - thanks!

mossy 10-04-2003 12:19 PM

makes me more pissed at Valve after knowing how they are just ignoring us like that. They're abit stupit if you think about it.

Mega Man X 10-04-2003 12:52 PM

Nice :) I've signed that one too Slebine :). I dunno how accurate or how efficiently those petitions will actually work, but it's always good to help the little penguin.

Mega Man X 10-04-2003 12:59 PM

mossy is damn right. For me it's irrelevant if HL2 will or not be ported to Linux. Based on Valve attitudes, I won't ever support them again. HL is not a great game either. Perhaps for being the first game on it's genre with a somewhat "story line" made it "different". But for a game built over Quake and Quake 2 engines it has way too many bugs and apparently the game is too hard coded for them to release the source or port. DeuEX, RTCW, Ghost Recon are way cooler games. CS is pretty cool though. Perhaps we should start a petition for CS to be ported to a newer, better, faster, no bugged engine as Quake 3 or Unreal Tournament... that would be the tricky part and I bet Valve should change their attitudes as well. Come on, if it was not for good mods, half-life should be at the bottom of the bottom of the bottom of the barrel... But I doubt it would ever happen, CS team loves its crappy, bugged, dated HL engine ... and they are also doing profits with it.... unfortunately :(

Are you saying that DeusEX is linux native!? If so do i have to buy a specific linux version or is it on the same disc??

mossy 10-04-2003 02:15 PM

yeah it make you wonder...I think tho - that if they do go ahead and release the source or port it to linux then I would support them and purchase. Gaming companies need to be encouraged.

What ever happened to Tribes2 - did they fall thru?

Oops, nope, not officially, but DeusEX can run natively under Linux (there're some installers around, but I don't remember where). That's the beauty of coding in C and OpenGL ratter then C++ and DirectX. DeusEX also is a super mod for Unreal Tournament. I play DeusEX myself with WineX (this company does miracles and needs to be supported as well) and DeusEX plays as neat as in Winslow :). Most of games OpenGL compatible has an installer around officially or not, but they usually work and you don't need to buy another game.
I wanted to say that DeusEX is way cooler then HL, but I messed it up there, sorry :)

k i post the adds here:

You have to installe Truetype fonts under x11 too.
If you don't do this you can only start a cs game in Steam -> Servers with a double click on a cs 1.6 server, because there is only the background image of the game when you start it.

The second add is one for the performance. When you started steam set the nice of the wineserver pocess to 19.

slamp 10-21-2003 08:34 AM

Hi.. I have acctually got steam to update to a 100 %. But when I try to run it I get an error and it hangs.. So Untill the cs crew removes steam, it's almoust impossible to get it working just right :P

qwijibow 11-26-2003 07:01 PM

magamanX i disagree......
www.quakeforge.net

quake1 was the first ever TRUE 3d engine, its soo old, out dated, and crap graphics, but the quake comunity is still very much alive....... some games... quake, and maybe even counterstrike are classics which will never die.

Mega Man X 11-26-2003 07:12 PM

Quake is one of my favorite games (after Megaman series :), lol) and I really am proud of it's engine. It's very fast, portable and the most impressive is that the original Dos Quake was made with a free compiler. It also has a lot of OpenGL and even DirectX extensions and mods showing how easy to maintain and upgrade an very well coded engine is. Quake 2 is also good, but I kind liked the "Gothic" ambient that Quake1 shows.

Half-Life... what can I say of positive... Perhaps it' a pioneer at the genre of FPS mixed with a somewhat "story line". To be based on Quake 1 and 2 engines, it has way to many bugs to make it fun. Losing surfaces, sound, getting stuck at the poorly designed maps and so on. But then again, peoples might like Half-Life so much because it's a pioneer on it's genre. For me, it's just another bad game getting dust under my bed which got too much attention for what it truly is...
That how I personally few about the game. I won't even say what I think about the company behind it...

kasperhans 11-28-2003 12:36 AM

hey folks sorry for the delay ill do the english version as soon as i have some time currently its pretty busy over her :/

jago25_98 12-17-2003 04:09 AM

There is a version of DeusEx for linux but it never got released by Loki, somewhere the code exists but it has never been released. It was beta tested by a few people but they don't seem to be sharing the code.

jago25_98 12-17-2003 04:10 AM

Sierra should consider looking at the PS2 market, if you can port to that you can port to linux easily and cheaply.

Mega Man X 12-17-2003 06:04 AM

Sierra drives their business pretty bad. There're some installers for Sierra games on the Xbox though... but I doubt that they are official. Counter-Strike Condition Zero is on the Xbox already. It's pretty clear that Sierra does not understand how portability works. I bet they just made a CS - Condition Zero to Xbox because it's just as easy to make Xbox games as it's for Windows/DirectX... They don't port because they are either lazy or just don't know how to do it... PS2 is though to develop games though... very limited texturing, but still could be done... But not by Sierra, because once again, they are lazy :D

RHLinuxGUY 12-18-2003 12:51 AM

Why dont we just spam the hell out of Valve to the point where they flip out and give us the soure code to steam and cs. No but seriously if we keep sending e-mails(meaning EVERYONE) to Valve sonner or later they'll have to port steam to linux. Sounds kinda stupid, but hey, a cariage without a horse sounded stupid, and look what happened.

kyoshiro 12-18-2003 03:09 AM
