Civilization 3 and wine
Ok, this has probably been asked a million times, but I have yet to find someone with an actual solution.
I'm trying to run an installed version of Civ3 on Wine with DirectX 8 installed. When I run "wine Civilization3.exe" at the command line here is what I get: wine: Unhandled exception (thread 0009), starting debugger... WineDbg starting on pid 0x8 Unhandled exception: page fault on read access to 0x0000000c in 32-bit code (0x00561339). In 32 bit mode. I'd like to run it using Wine if possible. Thanks. |
Well it never worked for me on wine dude, nor did under winex, although under winex it install no problem but i just got the startup logo thennothing lol.
I am not sure if wine(now) supports civ3 dude, i heard of cedega did i am not sure thou |
I've been through this same process, and taken it about as far as I could. There is another thread somewhere on this forum where I discussed it, but to save you having to hunt through the forum, the answer in brief is:
No, Civ3 will not run under Wine. Nor will it run under CedegaCVS (ie the downloadable version). It *will* apparently work with the commercial version of Cedega. (but I haven't actually tried it). The reason for all this is that Civ3 uses DirectX for its graphics, which Cedega uses, but needs to pay a licence for, so it only comes with the paid version. It is a shame, because I really enjoy Civ3, but not enough to spend more money getting it to work. :( |
The problem is the macrovision protection
you must try replacing the civilization exe file with a nocd patched one, the problem come from the antipiracy protection.
|
really> dominedi????? but I used the original cd, i bought the dang game! cuz it is good and thought hey does programmers deserve it!
Spudley> is there anyway of knowing which files one need inorder 2 make civ run under cedega(CVS)? |
You can go to the website www.gamecopyworld.com in order to find a no-cd patch to try. No-CD patches are not illegal and are just used to allow you to run a game without wearing out your CD. The reason Cedega's commercial version can run Civ3, but wine and cedega cvs can't is most likely just because of the copy protection just as dominedi stated. Cedega has contracts that allow them to decode the copy protection mechanisms. They are only allowed to ditribute it in their commercial project because of licensing.
No not feel like you are letting down the developer's by using a no-cd patch. All you are doing is exercising your personal Fair Use Rights. I hope that solves your problem and helps you understand a little more about the underlying cause. |
I agree w2ith mammlouk beacause the latest version of wine even has directx9, or so I read on cnet.com
|
i understand your disappointment windowsrefugeeX but consider that wine is not windows and civilization and his copy protection shit want run in windows.
Just be sure to get the right "cheat" file for your civilization copy/version. And don't forget to "whine" to atari/infogrames/etc for them releasing version of their games for linux too (or utilities for running their game on linux). Good Luck |
I know, it is very disappointing so disappointment that i am, i am switching over to free civ, and heck why not email the programmers with ideas and see if i can help out in anyway.
screw civilization!!!! lol |
freeciv is the poor parent of civ3, very poor
|
I know it is! but who cares!!!! at least I can b a part of it and b helpful and screw civ3 lol I know civ3 is a good game, but with time I believe freeciv could become just as good or even more!
C'mon aren't some things on civ3 that you just don't like? how about the mutual pack>? where if ur ally gets attacked u r automatically at war w/ the other civilization!! that 2 me is stupid!!! or how about of some sort of black ops to overthrown a government of a country u just don't like so that country can fall into a civil war?!?!?!?!?! that sounds pretty good no!?? take advantage of things!!!! that's just an idea, i am sure if we start asking ppl what they want or don't like we get tons and tons of data lol |

yup, so if we really want good graphics I guess we have to contribute to the game no?
