Why not just play FreeCiv? I've never played Civ III, and if I remember correctly, it's not Sid Meier, so what's the point?

But I'm sure it's great. Sorry I can't help you, but FreeCiv came with my FC1 distro, I assume it came with yours, too. On top of that, you can even pick the Dunedain as your civilization. Hot.

well yeah i tried freeciv but i haven't really played it yet.
i tried playing Civilization with winex but it crashes n i have 2 reboot in order the regain control of the pc

Anyone had the same problem maybe u can help

YES YES!!!
I've tried to run Serious Sam the 2nd Encounter and Need for Speed Underground with CVSWineX. Serious Sam setup gives me the "unload the debugger" msgbox. NFS Underground almost finishes the install program then pops up with the same messege box. and when I try to run the installed NFSU it gives me that error...

yes....

Does anyone know anything about unloading the debugger or even anything about linux that might help coz I'm pretty new at it...

Thanx

Same problem with Wine and Sim City 3000 Unlimited

I'm having similar problems with Sim City 3000 Unlimited. I know that Loki made a Linux version, but I currently have an old Windows copy which I was hoping to get working under Wine. I'll continue seeking a solution, in addition to watching this thread.

Anne.

Just a thought....try wineX instead of wine.

CivIII is very much a Sid Meier game. You must be getting confused with the Alpha Centauri/Test of Time games that came out after Civ II. Civ III is more recent and much better than any of these previous releases.

FreeCiv is a clone of the original Civ game, which is now so ancient as to be laughable. Enjoyable in it's day, but come on..............things have moved on considerably since then.

I'm having problems starting Civ III using Wine. I'll post back when I've worked a way around (unless anyone else has helpful instructions as to how to get it to work).

Agreed.

However, I think FreeCiv could be transformed easily enough by an update in the graphics department. The graphics it has now are seriously dated. (this seems to be a common problem in OSS games... why is that? We have so many talented programmers, you'd think we could find a few more artists to contribute to the projects)

I've also had the same trouble getting Civ III running. I gave up trying after fighting with it for quite a while.

I will be very interested in following your progress. :) Please let us know if you do manage to get it running.

I GOT IT WORKING!!!!
All you have to do is install windows on a small partition. Run the game natively. Works perfect!

I know I'd rather not go the windows route too, but hey this game's worth it.

Oh come on, Civilization (Free or not) is not something that is affected by graphics.

Sure eyecandy is nice, that's why we have GFX cards with more than 2MB VRAM, but Civ3 is not something i'd call graphically taxing or impressive, FX5900 or not.

FreeCiv, last time i saw it (about 2 month ago) looked nice enough:

This is a game based on strategy, not on Pixel Shading.

I would disagree. I'm afraid I find FreeCiv's isometric tiles very hard on the eyes - the screen is just too busy, particularly on a high-resolution desktop. I think they would benefit greatly from having a larger scale tileset. They also seriously need to work on their city graphics.

Compare with the screenshots on the FreeCol project's homepage, and then tell me that FreeCiv looks good. It's a shame FreeCol isn't finished yet. (it's also a shame they couldn't have shared code with FreeCiv, but that's whole other issue)

However, this thread isn't about how nice FreeCiv is. I like FreeCiv, and I do play it.

But I have got a paid-for copy of Civ III, and I want to play it, so all I'm saying is that it would be nice to be able to run that too. That's what Wine is supposed to do. Especially since, as you say, it isn't exactly the most graphically intense game in the world.

windowsrefugeeX 05-13-2004 05:36 PM

I agree w/ Spudley, however freeciv does have some features that civ3 does not. but yeah i get ur point chakkerz.. But be real civ3 does have better graphics thatn freeciv, freeciv does need a little work and yeah u know what i am gonna email the programmers and give them some of my ideas, ideas that i would like to see on civ3 but ii rather see them on freeciv.

PS
jeepskate

did u installed civ3 under windows or linux? what version of windows did u use, i used xp but under wine or winex using xp partion doesn't work

chakkerz 05-16-2004 11:36 PM

Hmm ... Told :)

FreeCol does look nice, though at the same time, very large are those units in that latest screenshot. Though i'd assume it'd zoom out or something.

Anyway, yes, Civ3 does look nicer than FreeCiv, but ... hmm ... i just think that a game is good for what it makes you think while you're playing it. Civ 3 is beautiful, no argument there, but the original was good too, and is still good, despite being dated.

As for the HighRes argument, point taken, but isn't that why you crank up the res? to see more of the map? I run high res to see more code.

As for the Winex Issue ... do you have NTFS file support?
