Cannot change resolution in games

Hi, I'm having some problems with changing game resolutions on linux.

This goes for both native and winex games.

If I change the resolution the screen resolution it self will not be changed, just the viewport.
As a result of that if my Desktop is running at 1280*1024 and the game is running at 800*600, it will run in a kind of window-like mode, with the viewport in the top left corner and the rest of the screen is black.

I had it working, but somehow it got f*cked up. I don't know what I did to make it become this way.

Here is my specs:

Slackware 9.1
Kernel: 2.6.8.1-mm3
KDE 3.1.4
XFree86 4.3.0
ATI 9800PRO with fglrx drivers version: X4.3.0-3.11.1

Any help would be appriciated.

You need proper modelines in your XFConfig file...

Just having the resolutions listed won't do it, they have to be running at the right refresh rate with the right modeline adjustments or you won't get that resolution.

Many times, you can use the distro's graphic configurtation tools to do this. With Slack,... I'm at a loss,... I use RPM based distros (currently SuSE 9.1).
