Can't run Doom 3 demo ("Cant initialize OpenGl")

I recently downloaded/installed the doom 3 demo. However, when I try to run it, I get the message "unable to initialize OpenGl" and the terminal promptly exits. Every other native linux game (ut2004, enemy territory, tux racer) runs fine. How do I run the doom 3 demo?

Try setting your display to 24bits, which is a fix for some folks.

I have the same problem, but I think mine is 64bit related. I'm using Mandrake 10.1 64bit version. All other OpenGL works fine but doom3 (retail game) won't start, complaing of your same error. I have my screen configured for 24bits, but still nothing.

Is anyone out there able to play doom3 on a 64bit Linux distro?

Doom3 on x86_64

It does run on Fedora core 3 for x86_64. Be aware that installing the NVIDIA drivers in this distro is a bit of a challenge in itself, but mostly fixed by editing the grub boot entry to omit the boot manager before installing the drivers.

I got too frustrated in being unable to play my mp3s though...

Hey I just installed FC 3 64 today. Thanks for the Nvidia tip- I was just about to ask! Btw- a FC2 rpm works for mp3 playback for FC3, as said here:

Actually I did eventually get MP3s working in a similar manner, but there were some other issues as I've been a longstanding Mandrake user, and used to those config tools!

However, am missing Doom3 at moment, and can't work out why the Mandrake x86_64 distro is different to FC3 x86_64 in that there is a "unable to initialise OpenGL error"

Anyone solved this?
