OpenGL Battle Chess for Linux

I don't know if any of you every played Battle Chess back in the day (1988), but a few and my friends and I started developing "Brutal Chess", a new improved OpenGL toting clone.

We're currently in pre-alpha, have a chess engine working, and are starting to implement the graphical ui. There isn't a whole lot available yet, but check out our blog and sourceforge project if you're interested.

We're making progress pretty rapidly. :-)

I used to LOVE that game! My dad introduced me to it off of a floppy disk he borrowed from someone way back in the day when you could put a ton of games on 1 floppy.

If you do a good job of that it will be a game I would definitly download, battle chess was one of the first PC games I played. Brilliant. will you be going for a battle chess look to all the peices or will it be a more traditional (but still animated, harry potterish) set?

good luck

Brutal Chess Public Release

Hey everyone. I just wanted to drop in and say that Brutal Chess is in public alpha testing now. It would mean a lot to the dev team if you could grab the alpha and help stress test the code. We're looking for chess engine annomalies as well as any other bugs you might find. Check us out at our dev blog: Brutal Chess

thanks

Advertising isn't allowed here on the forums through posts. Maybe talk about that with jeremy or one of the mods.

syg00 08-03-2005 09:37 AM

Mmmmm - a bit harsh.
The rules state;
Quote:

There is no selling allowed in the forums. If you are interested in advertising you can email ads@linuxquestions.org.
I read that as advertising in the context of selling.
I personally have NO concern with people announcing gpl code on LQ - the more the better.
But as stated, Jeremy or the gang are the final arbiters.

Ok, I'm sorry if it sounded rude, I didn't know that is a GPL product, actually the link doesn't work for me, it keeps loading for a couple of minutes then I get a '(110) Connection timeout'. My appologies if I offended anyone.

gauntalus 08-03-2005 10:27 AM

Yeah sourceforge is down right now. I kind of thought that the sourceforge URL would tip people off to the fact that it was GPL...

gauntalus 08-04-2005 02:42 PM

It appears the sourceforge database server is finally back up, so it is possible to access the development blog once again. Also, I realized that I should have posted a link to the project page before. The project page is where you can actually grab the files, and if the development blog goes down there is still a good change that the sourceforge project page will be up. They're a bit pickier about keeping those up and running. So here's the link to the Brutal Chess Project Page.

Also, currently you have to compile the source under linux, which requires having SDL and FreeType installed. I know a lot of people don't want to go to the trouble so we're talking about releasing a pre-compiled binary though some of the other group members don't seem to happy about it. :-)

Brual Chess is a remake of the old Battle Chess game that Interplay released in 1988. Brutal Chess sports updated graphics that use OpenGL; Brutal Chess uses SDL for windowing, is platform-independent, and is licensed under the GPL. Sourcecode is available in CVS via sourceforge. Currently since we're still testing the chess engine the pieces aren't little characters yet they're just normal chess pieces. Check us out at our dev blog: Brutal Chess. The sourceforge database server has been undergoing maintenance recently, so in case the development blog is down you can visit the Brutal Chess Project Page.

Thanks!

cool, always wanted to see if I could get my hands on something like that... will be more then happy to download and test soon as I get the chance :D.. (too bad I wasnt much of a chess player though.. who knows this could be the turning point!) and always willing to help out the game developers of *nix like systems.. we need more people like you guys around!

gauntalus 08-04-2005 03:03 PM

Great, thanks. By the way, the pretty reflections you see are in CVS but not in the release package. Since you need to build it yourself anyways I recommend getting the current state from CVS. Instructions on provided on sourceforge on how to do that. If anyone needs any help just let me know.

I've merged the three threads on this subject together. While we are typically more lenient about this kind of advertising (ie. advertising OSS) please leave it at what has already been posted.

Keep in mind, if every OSS project out there were to post on there progress it would be impossible to find legitimate questions from people who need help on these boards... which of course is the spirit of LQ.org in the first place.

Thank you.

John
