Anyone interested in playing Quake online?

I am a big fan of iD's fps,in particular Quake3 and 4.
Would anyone else be interested in playing online?
Deathmatch or team deathmatch if we have enough players.
How about an LQ clan?.
Your thoughts will be appreciated.

You mean the originals or derivatives ? I don't think anyone plays or would really want to play the original quake 3 online when there are newer, improved alternatives. As for quake 4, I don't find it fun online. Everyone just uses the rocket launcher or DMG, all the other weapons seem useless.

I'm not going to join a clan where there is a clan leader or ranks, because more often than not I will be better than everyone in my clan and yet have lowest rank. I'm also against a hierarchy. One day, when I find a game that I really like and will play for a while, I'll make a round-table clan.

There's usually somewhere in the region of 2000 quake3 servers online.
If you have a copy, go to multiplayer and search for yourself.
Quake4 has about 200 on average.

No i'm not interested in a clan leader or ranks either.
Just looking to play for the hell of it.Nothing serious.

Well, in that case, I guess I could join. But I don't like quake 4 online, nor do I like ETQW online, but I will play it with friends, because the biggest problem with it is not the necessarily online gameplay, but the people. I don't have a copy of quake 3 with me (the original). Other solutions ...

Other solutions.....
Well for Quake3 i'd suggest:

http://ioquake3.org/

But you will still need pak0.pk3 from the install disc,if you can get access.

Another possibility would be:

http://openarena.ws/
Download,no install disc required.

I agree about ETQW,not a favourite of mine and also no deathmatch mode.
Shame you're not into Q4 online, but as you say often it's the people that can
be a problem rather than the game play. This was part of the reason for this
post to try and find 'sensible' online players.

How do you feel about Doom3?,or maybe ut2004?
Let me know what you think.

H_TeXMeX_H 04-10-2009 04:27 PM

Well, I guess I could try quake 4 again. I think UT2004 was great, but does anyone still play it ? I remember I stopped playing a few years ago because there were so few people playing, did it change ? I do have UT2004 handy. I also know about openarena, and have played it for a while, but it got boring.

the trooper 04-10-2009 04:53 PM

It's been a while since i ran ut2004,but the last i looked it had a reasonable online following.
Doom3 also has a online deathmatch capability.
Any ideas as to how we could organize online matches?,ie where and when?.
Have you ever hosted an online game server yourself?

H_TeXMeX_H 04-11-2009 04:47 AM

How to organize matches: by any online means of communication, i.e. site, forum, messenger, etc.

I have hosted a game server before, but if you don't have a good connection, you can't have too many people playing. For example with my connection, I'm betting I can host maybe 8-10 people, but no more.

Also, I don't have Doom 3, I never bought it. I don't really like scary games like that. Even quake 4 was kinda disturbing.

the trooper 04-11-2009 05:32 AM

Well it looks like just us so far....
Let's give it a few more days to see if anyone else is interested.

If we decide to go down the road of hosting a server i think it would be a good idea to password
protect it.We could then have friends and other LQ members play rather than be fully open.

Would it be cool to contact you via this site to arrange games?.

Yeah, sure, however you want. You can also PM me or maybe using yahoo messenger, although I'm not constantly on.

sudo apt-get install xqf

I'm playing ioQuake3, Quake4, UT , UT2004 - all the games have loads of people playing at any one time. Even the clan scene is very active, especially UT2004 TAM mod. If you think you,re good at UT2004 try Gifted clan server ut2004://212.187.246.3:7777/
Most of the time i get my ass whooped there :D

the trooper 04-11-2009 06:09 AM

Sounds like a plan.
I'm not signed up for any IM clients at the moment.
I will have a look at yahoo.
Thanks Texmex, i'll be in touch.

the trooper 04-11-2009 06:13 AM
