Anyone have problems with choosing visual Quality in Doom 3?

As in choosing the quality from the Doom 3 system menu.

It starts out using medium quality when I first run the game. Then if I try to set the quality to high (since I got a new video card, GeForce 7600GS), the visual quality lowers itself to low quality and stays that way til I delete the DoomConfig.cfg file. At first, I thought it was just my video card I was using didn't allow for good visual quality under Linux (I was using a GeForce 4 Ti4400 at that time), but when I installed my GeForce 7600GS I ran in to the same problem.

I can actually get Doom 3 to run in High quality mode if I copy the DoomConfig.cfg from my windows install. But I shouldn't have to do that.

Anyone else experienced this problem? If so, how was it that you fixed it?

Thanks in Advance.

BTW, System specs are:

ABit NF7 nForce 2 Motherboard
AthlonXP 2400+
512MB of DDR PC2700 Ram
GeForce 7600GS (any talk about how my system is bottlenecking my video card performance will not be tolerated)
Gentoo Linux
