To answer question of OP. I have tried Steamos. The big problem is that a lot of the game devs are waiting for Steamos to be officially released before they fix their games. Some games work now but many do not.
But I don't use windows at all so I guess I am a linux only gamer.
But not doing too much gaming really. Valve are betting on steamos in the long run. There's a lot of good stuff coming to gaming on linux. Including Vulkan. Steamos will be good for linux gaming because from a developer's point of view it is easier to support one linux flavor rather than many flavors.
Personally, I'm hoping to find a game engine that works in Linux.
Look at Godot http://www.godotengine.org (I think they are working on the website right now)
It is more than an engine and actively developed and there's no licensing fees or any revenue sharing.
I don't game often, but when I do, I game in linux.
Although not being much of a gamer, I tend to take a stance that if it doesn't exist for linux natively. Then it doesn't exist at all. About the only games I've ever spent money on was Quake II and Runescape. With various other games freely available on linux that I sometimes play. Lincity, Torcs, Armagetronad, etracer (tux racer), Bzflag, moon-buggy and many others.
