Question americas army problems with graphics

here's my problem.

AAO installs itself properly without any error messages.
the start screen is displayed correctly but in the game the graphics are a real mess. actually i can't see anything.
the whole screen is grey (but moving), the game itself keeps running.

any suggestions?

here's the hard- and software i'm using:

athlon XP 1600+
ati radeon 9000
SiS soundsystem

mandrake 9.1
AAO 1.9

What version of Xfree86 are you using? I had a load of problems with AA using 4.2, but everything smoothed out when I upgraded to 4.3.
