XFree86 and GPM conflicts?
 

Hello Again,

Question! I have XFree86 up and running! WHOOO HOOO! However after I exit it X my mouse acts like a keyboard and highlights stuff with any movement and exhibits other weird behaviour. Basically I have to log out and back in to LFS to get things back to normal. Has anyone ever had this issue? Could it be a conflict with GPM and XFree86? Any ideas?

What protocol GPMD uses? Try editing /etc/sysconfig/mouse file, and if there's IMPS/2, change it to PS/2

I have had the same problem with gpm that cuco76 describes except that I had the problem in Slackware 9.1 and more recently in Slackware 10. I have not yet installed LFS so for me the gpm problem occured with Slackware. I have tried both Ithe MPS/2 and PS2 protocols and the problem occured in either case so I finally just disabled gpm and the problem went away. On my computer, I would boot up in run level 3 and everything would be ok. At that point there was no gpm problem. Then I would type startx and everything would still be ok but, when I exited gnome and went back to the command line interface the gpm problems would occur whenever I moved the mouse. Moving the mouse slightly would case miscellaneous random text to be pasted onto the command line along with several carriage returns. Near the top of the screen text would sometimes also be highlighted when I first moved the mouse. To temporarily stop gpm I would run the script that starts or stops gpm and would use the stop parameter. Stopping gpm always stopped the problem. The details of where the script is that starts or stops gpm is slightly different for Slackware because it is one of the few distros that use more of a BSD style initialization. I would assume that LFS probably uses more of a system V style initialization like most other Linux distros.

I don't know if this relevant or not but I have PNY Verto GeForce2 AGP video card with 64 MB of SDRAM. I have a Soyo KT-400 Dragon Ultra Platinum Plus motherboard with the KT-400 chipset and an Athlon XP 2600+ processor and 1 GB of SDRAM running at PC2700 speed. My optical mouse is hooked to the PS/2 mouse port. I orignally was using a Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer mouse and then later used a Logitech optical mouse. The problem occured with either mouse.

Slackware 9.1 had used XFree86 but, Slackware 10 uses X.org instead so it is interesting that the problem occured for me in both cases. I do not have any idea what actually caused the problem.

Opps, I did ment to say that my computer uses 1GB of DDR ram not SDRAM, not that it is really likely to be relevant to the problem.

I changed from IMPS/2 ro PS/2 and the problem still exists. I tried restarting GPM and that didn't solve it either. The only way to fix it is to restart the machine. Anyone have any ideas?

OK I think I found the solution and that is to disable GPM in runlevel 5? I am not sure how to do this though!

Anyone know?
