I am not yet blind, but headed that direction...
which must explain why I cannot find where in the xconfig
graphical interface (I'm trying to compile the 2.4.19 kernel)
one can specify support for a pci disk controller (ata, not
scsi).

I have a pci controller which does work--I previously
had the right checkbox selected in xconfig, and things
compiled and ran just fine--but because of alsa problems
(who doesn't have them?!) I am recompiling the kernel,
but somehow managed to delete previous configuration
files and now can neither find nor remember where and what
box to check in xconfig to make my pci disk controller
work.

I would mention the controller by name if i could
remember it; but although I have temporarily forgotten,
I am sure I would remember if only I could but stare at the
right *section* of xconfig; that is, I'll know when I see it.

Please send a clue.

I don't know if this is what you're looking for, but if you do "make menuconfig"
go to:

ATA/IDE/MFM/RLL support --->
IDE, ATA, and ATAPI Block devices ---->

and check around in there
