which distro


is there a command you can type to show which distro is the linux OS you are using?

While it's possible to identify certain distros by some non-standard method, there is no universal command to identify a distro.

Isn't there a file somewhere which stores the version? That might contain the distro name...tho I don't remember where/what it is called.

uname -a or uname -r will give you lots of information about your kernel version and may even give you info on your distro. Or try "cat /etc/<distro>-version"
