when is root not root?

Hi,

I've just gone through a LFS 5.1.1 install (3 DAYS!) and it comes up fine, BUT

I'm getting several odd problems which I think may be related....

1) hostane doesn't work
2) When logging in, .bashrc isn't executed (but if I su as a user, it is...!)
3) Using ping gives an error saying it must be run as root (I'm logged in as root!)
4) DNS isn't resolving.

That's it for now! Any ideas anyone????

Cheers,

Paul Simpson

I just finished my installation too. I used Automatic LFS so I could let it run all night

1. Hostname doesn't work - I assume you mean your system doesn't seem to have a hostname. Check that you have the right entry in the /etc/hosts file and make sure you have <someIP> <somehostFQDN> <somehost>

for example: 192.168.2.4 lfs.mynet.com lfs

2. I noticed that logging in as root doesn't seem to run bashrc. It's beyond me but if it happens to you too, it must be normal.

3. I have no explanation for this. the only thing I am going to guess is that your root account isn't ID 0. Check the /etc/passwd file If it has something other than root:x:0:0...... That may be your problem.

4. check your /etc/resolv.conf file. ( make sure it isn't spelled resolve.conf. I made that mistake already) Check that you have a line that states nameserver <someIP> if you don't have a DNS server like on a linksys or something just point it to your localhost so... nameserver 127.0.0.1

Thanks for the response! All night, eh? I had an SBU of 20 minutes (slow machine!)....

Unfortunately, this doesn't seem to work

1 - Yep, done that. I've also tried to use the hostname command. No error, no nothing.

2 - It doesn't seem to be connected to the user, but the login method. If I login as a user (root or otherwise) at the prompt - no bashrc. If I then su to another user (including root), then bashrc does it's stuff!

3 - yep, 0:0 ...????

4 - Again, yes.

I used the package - tracking idea where you install each bit as a user named ofter that user and I'm wondering if this may be part of the problem. I can't help feeling that these problems are all connected somehow ..

Update!

For anyone who'se found this thread in a search - I've solved the .bashrc problem!!!

It's all explained in the "Beyond Linux From Scratch" book in Chapter 3. (The Bash Shell Startup Files)

It's all down to login shells (from the initial login) using one set of startup files verses non-login shells (like su) using another...

Regarding PING, HOSTNAME etc. It would seem to be the package management system. I dunno exactly what's happening, but if I go to the install directory and execute it from there, it works! I copied this one over by hand and BINGO!!!

Not sure what happened with DNS, I kept re-installing stuff and suddenly it worked.... I suspect the package management system again. My advice to others is to use this with caution and certainly, for your first LFS systm, do it "vanilla".

I hope this helps others!
