Upgrading glibc to 2.4

Question:
I have an old glibc ... 2.3.2 or something.

It seems to reside under /lib

I have now complied glibc-2.4.0 into /opt

No errors happened.

Can I safely delete the old glibc in /lib ?

I assume no, thats why I ask here in order to find
out what things I have to do before I can
remove /lib (I dont mind breaking, I want to
learn anyway, and I have backups.)

Which package management system (e.g. rpm, deb) are you using?

PcLinux OS currently. It should be a Mandrake variant.

The problem isnt about a package manager or distro, but
a source install question, which is why I am
trying to ask the more knowledgable guys here

For example all glibc I know seem to reside in
/lib
and I wonder whats the typical way to upgrade
to a newer glibc for... lets say, package
maintainers!
