Updating RH8

Hi, Been running RH8 for several months now and am confused about periodically updating. Do you have to pay RedHat for this service? I registered when I got the program and was able to update free, but now RH says the period has expired and I must get a subscription for a min $60 a year. Their site is a bit confusing and unclear about what's what.
