The computer I'm compiling LFS on locked up. How long should I wait?

I'm was in the middle of compiling GCC (1st pass) and the computer became more locked up than Fort Knox. I can't even move the cursor. Even the clock has stopped. Judging by how off it is, the system has been locked up like this for over 30 minutes.

Is this normal? Or should I powerdown and try to pick up from where I left off? (Which may not be easy from the LiveCD...)

The processor is 2.8 GHz, but the computer has only 256MB of RAM. I doubted that would be enough, so I alloted ~700MB of swap space (overkill), and I did remember to implement it. SBU time is 4 minutes, 52 seconds.
