Unhappy Stuck at Chapter 5.4, Error when making dir for Binutils 2.20

When I get to Chapter 5.4 and enter in the code,

mkdir -v ../binutils-build
cd ../binutils-build

It says Permission denied, and so it fails to create the dir.

I did everything it said. I tried it two times with the same results.

At that point, can you post the output of:

ls -l ../

... and:

pwd

Re: Codes

I entered in ls -l ../ and got

total 8
drwxr-xr-x 3 jhalfs jhalfs 4096 Nov 29 2007 jhalfs
drwxr-xr-x 2 lfs lfs 4096 Mar 30 19:59 lfs

then pwd and I got
/home/lfs

Looks like your user only has write access inside the /home/lfs folder. That is fine, just run the commands from inside another folder - /home/lfs/binutils for example. I would think this extra folder should be created when you extract the source.

In addition to that read this section again:
http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/lfs/...tructions.html
Pay close attention to the Notes. You should be in the package's source directory when executing the commands given in the book.

Re:

Thanks, I found my self not looking at the notes carefully. I read them but I forgot to make sure I
Code:
cd $LFS/sources/binutils-2.20
into that folder.
