strange Chroot failure

I built LFS 5.0 and logged in with the new Chroot command, and built some blfs packages. i then changed the permissions of $LFS/sources so that i could download packages into it as a normal user on my former system (mandrake 9.0); i set the owner to my default user because chmod a+rw did not work. now when i try to use the chroot command ($LFS set) i get a line
Code:
chroot: /usr/bin/env
.
when i press enter, nothin happens and i have to abort with crtl+c.
what is wrong?

thanks in advance.

Could you post the full chroot command you used and the output that followed? That would help to see what is going on a little better.

And which section of LFS are you in as there are two chroot commands in that book. One in chapter 6 and one near the end.

Not sure if you just mistyped it into here or in the terminal like that but you need a backslash before the $ symbol...

PS1='\u:\w\$ '

Thats what I thought. Well if you can .. can you go ahead and retry logging in then paste the command and all the errors you get?
The only thing I could suggest right now without seeing the exact message would be to go ahead and do echo $LFS just to make sure it is still set.
Oh and since you reset permissions go ahead and rerun those two commands at the begging.. umm let me find em..

chown lfs $LFS/tools
chown lfs $LFS/sources

Though it prob. doesnt matter.... since you would be logging in as root....
