I want to install Linux as an independent installation.
Firstly,
[LIST=1]What format is required on the HD?Do I need to start with a DOS startup disk? What is the recommended first load/load sequence: Ubuntu, Gnome, Suse or?

Linux from Scratch is where you build up the system... from scratch, compiling everything from source? Is this what you mean? Your third point there makes me wonder what you mean.... GNOME is a window composer and suite of apps, and openSUSE and Ubuntu are complete distributions (the linux kernel and a whole load of apps that are usefull).

Have you used Linux before? Are you after some guidence as to where to start?

There are a few options as that what format your hard drive as, most commonly (for now) I would say is ext3. But could you clarify what you want before wiping your hard drive!!

Hope some of this helps you in the right direction, and apologies if I have missed your points!
