Sound card error using monolithic kernel

Hi chaps, hope someone can help.

I have installed LFS-6.3 with ALSA-1.0.13 from the BLFS book. The trouble is that I'm having trouble with the sound card, which works fine on the host distribution (still installed thanks to this problem!).

I have used the monolithic kernel structure as suggested in the book but when I try alsaconf I get:

modinfo: could not open /lib/modules/2.6.22.5/modules.dep

I also get sound related error messages from KDE/arts.

So my (first) question is: Can one have a sound card with ALSA and a monolithic kernel or do I *have* to switch to a modular kernel?

Another related question: alsa is included in the kernel but how would one conigure a sound card without tools like alsaconf?

Many thanks in advance....

Forgotten dmesg output:

ALSA device list:
#0: Intel ICH5 with AD1981B at irq 20

So my card seems to be loaded. Configuration?

The ALSA wiki recommends that one does not compile ALSA directly into the kernel. I should have read that before posting, I'm a bad man. I do, however, still have a problem getting any sound out of the card.

I have compiled a modular kernel. Output of lsmod:

snd_intel8x0 36124 0
snd_ac97_codec 95648 1 snd_intel8x0
ac97_bus 6528 1 snd_ac97_codec
snd_pcm 75396 2 snd_intel8x0,snd_ac97_codec
snd_timer 24836 1 snd_pcm
snd 47096 4 snd_intel8x0,snd_ac97_codec,snd_pcm,snd_timer
soundcore 11744 1 snd
snd_page_alloc 14344 2 snd_intel8x0,snd_pcm

and lspci:
00:1f.5 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corporation 82801EB/ER (ICH5/ICH5R) AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 02)

ls /dev/snd:
controlC0 pcmC0D0c pcmC0D0p pcmC0D1c pcmC0D2c pcmC0D3c pcmC0D4p timer

ls /proc/asound:
card0 cards devices ICH5 modules pcm timers version

ls /proc/asound/card0:
codec97#0 id intel8x0 pcm0c pcm0p pcm1c pcm2c pcm3c pcm4p

If I run speaker-test as root I get no errors but no sound. I have added the group "audio" to my list of groups and as a user speaker-test gives me:
Playback device is default
Stream parameters are 48000Hz, S16_LE, 1 channels
Using 16 octaves of pink noise
ALSA lib confmisc.c:670snd_func_card_driver) cannot find card '0'
ALSA lib conf.c:3500_snd_config_evaluate) function snd_func_card_driver returned error: No such device
ALSA lib confmisc.c:391snd_func_concat) error evaluating strings
ALSA lib conf.c:3500_snd_config_evaluate) function snd_func_concat returned error: No such device
ALSA lib confmisc.c:1070snd_func_refer) error evaluating name
ALSA lib conf.c:3500_snd_config_evaluate) function snd_func_refer returned error: No such device
ALSA lib conf.c:3968snd_config_expand) Evaluate error: No such device
ALSA lib pcm.c:2143snd_pcm_open_noupdate) Unknown PCM default
Playback open error: -19,No such device
...etc

Cannot find card '0'? Is it expecting some an alias in modprobe.conf? If it is then I have conlicting information because I was under the impression that aliases were not friends with udev. Are these errors to do with permissions?

Can anybody help me configure my sound card?

....and how do I stop my terminal output being rendered as a smiley?
