size of LFS

My LFS install is getting pretty big now.... Since finishing the first book ive installed the core packages for kde, xorg, koffice, xmms, mplayer, gpaco and whatever packages they depend on.

My install is now 4.3gb! Ill be lucky to get this on a dvd. Xorg, kde and koffice come in at 1.8gb (as per the blfs book) but I dont know where the space has gone.

I know I can compress the man pages but is there any other way of decreasing the size if the install?

How the hell do knoppix get all that stuff in 700mb?!

sorry, another null post.
My trash wasn't emptying properly, the files weren't visible but must still have been there... its only 2.2gb now.
I can account for most of it.

Well, to answer this question. It's through the use of a compressed file system known as squashfs. The LFS live CD uses it.
