shadow-4.2.1 not getting password and automatically sets one itself.

I compiled and installed shadow-4.2.1. Then executed pwconv, grpconv.

But "passwd root" command did not get the password from me it automatically set a password. When issuing the passwd root command the following is the result.

root:/sources/shadow-4.2.1# passwd root
Changing password for root
Enter the new password (minimum of 5 characters)
Please use a combination of upper and lower case letters and numbers.
Bad password: too short.
Warning: weak password (enter it again to use it anyway).
passwd: password changed.

The password not getting from me in command prompt it just went up to password changed without asking password.

content of /etc/shadow and /etc/gshadow after running the passwd root.

root:/sources/shadow-4.2.1# cat /etc/shadow

Which distro are using?

Does not your distro provides shadow package? Do you use PAM? Did you compiled shadow with PAM support?

Did you tried again?
