question about use of distros
can i use gentoo's kernel to get the initial install up, use slax for support, and still boot windows for games all while/to perform a LFS installation? is there another better way?

Sure you can use Gentoo's kernel or base install for all of those things.

Yes, everyone is supposed to go through the whole book. Chapter 5 builds a system from which to build your LFS system. While you could just build Chapter 6 out of Gentoo, this could cause problems with programs linking to parts of the host system that won't be there when you reboot into LFS, so to be sure everything will work you should go through Chapter 5.
And yes, you can work in chroot and keep doing other stuff the whole time.
