pty problem on chapter 6.11.1

Hello,

Im working with slackware 12.2.
Everything was going well and in this chapter i get a message that there are no more pty's.

According to the faq i need to check this :
CONFIG_UNIX98_PTYS=y
CONFIG_DEVPTS_FS=y

In kernel 2.6.27 on slackware
Config_unix98_pty's=y

But as far i know is config_devpts obsolute since kernel 2.6.3.

How can i solve this ?

Hi,

I've been helping you a few times in the past days and it seems you are struggling a bit (not meant as an insult, just an observation....).
One thing I noticed is that some of your problems seem to be host related, why don't you download the LFS liveCD and use that as host?

Ok, that said, now the bad news: Chapter 6 uses the temporary environment you build in chapter 5 and does _not_ use the host system (slackware in your case) anymore. A No more pty's message at this stage of the build points to errors somewhere in chapter 5.......

Hi,

There is no 6.4 liveCD, so download this one:
http://ftp.lfs-matrix.net/pub/lfs-li...2160-nosrc.iso

This is for LFS 6.3 and has no packages included. The only thing that counts for you is to have a host system that works.

After downloading and burning the ISO boot from it and start with LFS 6.4. You do seem to have the needed packages to build 6.4, it's also a good idea to have the documentation handy.

Hope this gets you on the right track again.

Yep.

Remove everything you've done so far and start with a clean slate.

By now your current build isn't working correctly and leaving it on your box could interfere with your build.

And don't give up! It also took me a while to get it right the first time I tried

Hi,

Get a copy from the LFS site. The book that is included on the cd is for LFS 6.3, not 6.4.

Hi,

If you do not finish chapter 5 in one go, but stop/start in between you do need to (re)create the lfs user. You actually need to do most of the steps from chapter 4 (4.2 is not needed, that should be set up already, but do check!).

If you want to stop during chapter 6 you need to set up other things as well.

This article is from the LFS hint page: How to resume your work after a break at different LFS stages.

You do need to be careful, this is an older document (2006) and needs some adjusting for the new situation. I cannot help you there, I never used this document. I split the book in three parts and can safely stop in between:

1) all up to and including chapter 5
2) chapter 6
3) 'rest'

Hope this helps.
