permission denied using Knoppix

hi all. well today im starting with LFS... im using knoppix 3.2. when i get to the part when u compile binutils u r guided to make a directory
mkdir ../binutils-build
cd ../binutils-build

my question is, which directory is ../ ? i mean where binutils-build is created? in $LFS ?
but wherever i try to make the folder... i get this message...
mkdir: cannot create directory `../binutils-bin': Permission denied
although ive followed all the instructions...

i know this problem is so stupid but im not sure how can i overpass it...

thanks.

Hi.

../ means the directory above the current one.

So if I was in /home/dave then mkdir ../binutils-build would create /home/bunitils-build

You may not have permission to create files in the folder above the one you're in. Try doing this as root, or compiling from a different folder.

eisheth.zenunim, are you running knoppix right from cd? Or have you installed it on your HD. You must keep in mind that you should edit the file "/etc/fstab" on you knoppix system before mounting the LFS partition. Say you want to use /dev/hda2 as you LFS root partition, the entery of /dev/hda2 should look something like this:

/dev/hda2 /mnt/hda2 ext3 defaults 0 0

Whats important is the "defaults" thing.
