Partitioning and host system

I am a newbie with some conceptual difficulties getting started with Linux From Scratch.

For starters, I don't really understand if there is a specific set-up for the host system. I can imagine that you have separate computers and use one as the host system for the other (for example, by mounting the hard drive for the LFS system on the host system). On the other hand, I can also imagine that you have a single computer and use different partitions to run both LFS and the host OS on the same computer.

Currently, I have a spare laptop I can format for the sole purpose of building Linux from scratch. I have a set up partitions like this:
/ (100GiB)
/lfs (32GiB)
/home (50GiB)
/usr/src (50GiB)
/boot (100MiB)

and about 8GiB of swap space. However, when I update my Linux Mint host OS, I run out of space on /boot (apparently, Linux Mint tries to install initramfs on there...).

Am I doing something wrong with my partitions or should I just not update Linux Mint?

Ah, so there's nothing wrong with my partitioning scheme besides the size of the /boot partition? The LFS guide mentions 100MiB should be enough (but I guess that just takes into account the LFS kernel?)...

Thanks, will probably try this today.

Usually, you have more than one kernel stored in/under /boot and so, some space is needed there.

I reserved 1GiB for /boot (even though you and others recommended 500MiB), and everything seems to fit now: I am currently following the LFS guide
