Check the LFS website for the 'Hints' - or somewhere in the book there's a reference to hints for getting other package managers working on LFS. Whoever wrote the hint did it. I haven't tried getting portage on LFS and I wouldn't call what I've got LFS, but pkgtools is easy enough to get working on a source system.
I'm sure you could get portage working too but it seems like it'd just morph into a Gentoo system after awhile. Gentoo the long way round. Anyway - good luck.
