not able to mount floppy,cdrom

There are still a few problems with our system-:

1) when we run the command mount /media/floppy or mount /media/cdrom
we get the error-:

mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/cdrom or /dev/floppy,or too many mounted file systems.

2) when we log in as user we get a message-:

id:cannot find name for group ID 100
how can this be rectified.

3) When we log into our system we get (none)login

How can we Change "none"

could be a number of problems... It may already be mounted. Check the /media/floppy or /media/cdrom directories first.

mount /media/floppy will only work if you have user in your fstab.

try as root:
mount /dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom
or
mount /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy

the hdc is assuming you have only on CDROM but could be different depending on your configuration.

By running the command mount /dev/fd0 /media/floppy we were able to mount the floppy

Will we always have to write mount /dev/fd0 /media/floppy to mount it.why is mount /media/floppy not sufficient?

Do "mount -v /dev/fd0 /media/floppy" and see what filesystem it is being mounted as. Since it's a floppy, it's most likely vfat unless you formatted it as something else. But compare what it's being mounted as to what you have in your /etc/fstab. mount /dev/fd0 /media/floppy will ignore the line in the fstab and try to guess the filesystem whereas mount /media/floppy checks the fstab and uses the device and the filesystem from there.

Do a "groupadd -g 100 users"

Sounds like you haven't set your hostname or something. Do an "echo HOSTNAME=myhostname > /etc/sysconfig/network"

our fstab file:

/dev/fd0 /media/floppy auto noauto,owner,kudzu 0 0
/dev/cdrom /media/cdrom udf,iso9660 noauto,owner,kudzu,ro 0 0

after running the command "mount -v /dev/fd0 /media/floppy"
mount: you didnt specify a file system type for /dev/fd0
i will try type msdos
how do i rectify this?
